<hr /><b>What are the best books/DVDs for learning Yoga and Pilates?</b>
<p>I understand that others have asked similar questions but I didn&#039;t find an answer to help.  My doctor recommended that I start Yoga for some of my health concerns.  </p>
<p>I looked into classes and can&#039;t afford any right now.  I was looking at trying a combination of a book and a DVD.  Are there any specific books and/or DVD&#039;s someone can recommend for beginner Yoga?  </p>
<p>I am also looking into Pilates.  Are there any specific books and/or DVD&#039;s someone can recommend for beginner Pilates?</p>

<hr /><b>Yoga, pilates, or neither?</b>
<p>I&#039;m looking to losing about twenty pounds by around, eh, janurary/feburary of next year. Just slow and easy. I mostly want to lose it around the hips and thighs. I like yoga, but have been told that it wont do anything for weight loss and instead to do pilates. Which would sound the most reasonable. Also, what &#039;easy&#039;(I mean jump jacks, push ups, sit ups, w/e) should I add in to help. Dont worry about my diet, I just want to know about the work out.</p>

<p>Can Yoga Improve Or Even Cure Diabetes For Some People</p>
<p>Diabetes in various forms affects up to 5percent of the world population with 12 million diabetics in Western Europe alone. Of the different ways in which diabetes presents, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is probably the most commonly encountered genetic disease. NIDDM or Type II diabetes is multifactorial, depending also on environmental factors including obesity, sedentary lifestyles and nutritional imbalances.</p>
<p>Yoga has shown some beneficial results in curing diabetes. The yoga exercises that are prescribed for curing diabetes is different from hatha yoga exercise because it involves positions tailored to treat certain conditions, as well as meditation, relaxation and stretching exercises.</p>
<p>One of the studies conducted to cure diabetes was the one set up by the Yoga Biomedical Trust, founded in 1982 by biochemist Dr Robin Monro, and an Indian yoga research foundation which discovered that practicing yoga for 30 minutes a day for one month helped reduce blood glucose levels in some diabetics.</p>
<p>The yoga patients took part in one or two 90-minute sessions a week and were asked to practice at home. The classes included the specific yoga exercises of the spinal twist, the bow and abdominal breathing.</p>
<p>At the end of the 12 weeks blood sugar levels fell significantly in all patients in the group and were slightly raised in a control group which had not joined in the yoga sessions. Three yoga students managed to reduce their medication, including one man who had not changed his drug regime for 20 years.</p>
<p>It has been known for a long time that exercise is helpful for diabetics. Yoga therapy may help reduce stress levels which could play a part in maturity onset diabetes. But one drawback is that some patients would find it hard to keep up the regular sessions needed to sustain the benefit. All the patients said they would like to see these classes set up on a permanent basis but we don&#8217;t have the money.</p>
<p>It is not necessarily the exercise component of the yoga therapy package which is most important, because there is not enough physical exercise to account for the changes, but stress reduction has a lot to do with it. Stress hormones increase sugar levels in the blood. People also benefit from the stabilization of their moods which yoga brings,<br />

 an increased feeling of well-being and a feeling of being more in control, which may help with their diet control.</p>

<p>I am currently doing The Firm workout with the step and I do that every other day.  However, I am looking for something to fill in my other days.  I find that I can go off track if I am allowed &#8220;off days&#8221; LOL  Anywho, I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on which of these workouts would be good to fill in the blanks.  Or maybe you have some other suggestions of your own?</p>

<p>Since most people know that I&#8217;m heavily involved with Yoga and Pilates &#8211; studying, practicing, and teaching &#8211; one of the most frequent questions I am asked, aside from what the difference between the two is, is this &#8211; does Pilates work?</p>
<p>It seems counterintuitive to people that exercise which doesn&#8217;t make you sweat, usually, can be considered &#8220;real&#8221; exercise, therefore<span id="more-82"></span> they wonder how effective it can truly be. How can something that consists of basically lying there and moving your legs and arms around change your body?</p>
<p>Well, the first thing I can tell you is that that perception is all wrong. Pilates is more than just moving your legs and arms around, it&#8217;s the highly controlled way that you move them that makes all the difference. This is why, although at home Pilates tapes can be useful for what they are, it&#8217;s always better to start a Pilates routine with a professional, in a class if nothing else.</p>
<p>Pilates is so precise that doing it correctly or incorrectly is a very fine line, and you may not be able to determine it yourself. It&#8217;s always better to begin with someone guiding you who knows what they should be looking for and what to teach you.</p>
<p>In that context, Pilates does work, because you would actually be performing it correctly. However, the vast majority of people will not take the time or bear the expense to learn the basics the way they should initially, so for them, who knows? It&#8217;s a hit or miss proposition.</p>

<p>Pilates is an incredible exercise that has become extremely popular. It is an exercise that anyone can do no matter what your level of physical conditioning is. It is designed to stretch, strengthen and balance your body. It is a great exercise but do you know how Pilates got its start? Read this article and find out.</p>
<p>Pilates was started by the man who gave it its<span id="more-80"></span> name, Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates began to teach his own exercise program during World War I in England. Forced into an internment camp he taught his exercise program, which combined Yoga and ancient Roman techniques, to fellow internees. At the time he called the program Controlology. Later Pilates&#8217; wife, a nurse, would modify his exercise program so that injured patients would be able to use it. She helped make it what it is today. A well designed exercise program that anyone can do regardless of physical conditioning. Joseph Pilates past away in 1967 but he is far from forgotten.</p>
<p>Today, Pilates remains very popular. Every day more and more people take it up. It is practiced in all parts of the world from America to Canada to Europe and all the way to Asia. So if you are looking to take up a new exercise regimen, you should give Pilates a try.</p>

<p>Hi, i would love to open a yoga, pilates and dance classes studio. I found a space near my house but im not sure if this kind of bussiness takes more than what im thinking. The space is 3000 a month, and its 1500ft. it has 2 bathrooms, and all wood floors. One long space. Its store front. <p>What Is Pilates Certification</p>
<p>It is very important to understand what pilates certification is.</p>
<p>Pilates instructors today require certification to ensure you&#8217;re getting the real thing. The Pilates programs have grown into an industry. Joseph Pilates&#8217; original studies involved years of research, virtually unrecognized in his lifetime, but now world-renowned. So famous and detailed were the works of Joseph Pilates which were originally developed in a World War I internment camp in England,</p>
<p>There are two major classifications of Pilates certification. Pilates mat certification requires a thorough knowledge of Joseph Pilates&#8217; exercises, including rehabilitative and sports related training.</p>
<p>The other classification is the Pilates certification in equipment. Although there is no standardization in the available certifications, there are several&#8221;watchdog&#8221; organizations dedicated to maintaining the standards of excellence set forth by Joseph Pilates.</p>
<p>Certification as a mat instructor does not require as much training as that of a Pilates certification in equipment. The Pilates certification in mat instruction unfortunately allows for more &#8221;wriggle room&#8221; than the equipment certification. While a Pilates certification in mat instruction covers all the basic exercises, there is no requirement for time spent studying the methodology. One instructor may be well above the crowd in knowledge, while another may have only a cursory knowledge and level of skill. Pilates certification as a mat instructor may involve little more than a weekend of course work.</p>
<p>There are two reliable sources online to help you locate a qualified teacher: The Pilates Method Alliance and the non-profit Yoga Alliance group . These organizations are dedicated to preserving the integrity of Joseph Pilates&#8217; findings, with searchable databases of qualified teachers in your area. Both of these organizations offer information and tips on finding a qualified instructor and judging the relative quality of a Pilates certification.</p>
<p>The Pilates certification for equipment is far more difficult to obtain, usually requiring at least a year of studies in the Pilates method. Pilates certification in mat training is most often a prerequisite. Certification in Pilates equipment involves a basic level of knowledge in anatomy, physiology and the specific equipment used in Pilates exercis<br />

es. Knowledge of the various apparatus and modifications are also required.</p>
<p>Some certification programs divide the areas of knowledge in stepped degrees, studying each piece of equipment as it pertains to different population groups. Some programs are quite sophisticated in their scope, requiring as much as 900 hours of study on the part of the student.</p>
<p>One final point if you are actually looking for a pilates teacher you have to be aware of all the different qualifications pilates teachers can have. The first place to look is on the net. Then armed with that information you can checkout your local area for pilates teachers. Visit their classes and see how they run them and if you would feel comfortable there.
